I am a native English speaker and recent graduate of Harvard University (2011) with experience teaching and tutoring English through Harvard and in Ecuador, Lebanon, and France. Fluent in French, I am currently pursuing a master's degree at ENS de Lyon.
I am experienced in lesson and curriculum planning and offer individualized English lessons and homework help in Lyon, with the first meeting in a public location. I typically tutor at the ENS (métro Debourg) or at a university library elsewhere in Lyon. My goal is to engage and excite students while contributing to their progress in the four key language skill areas.
During my time at Harvard, I served as an ESL tutor and conversation partner for researchers and PhD students from China and Taiwan. I worked with these students to improve their English pronunciation, comprehension, and fluency. We read news articles, watched television clips, and discussed American culture, current events, and their own research and interests. The students I tutored broadened their vocabulary, honed their grammar, and gained a better understanding of their new environment. They use the skills I helped them to develop throughout their daily lives, in contexts both personal and professional.
I taught two English classes in Quito, Ecuador in the summer of 2008, and in 2009 I co-established and directed a free summer English program in the Shouf area of Lebanon. Thanks to my time in the classroom, I have learned how to present material in a way that is clear, interesting, and memorable.
Last year, I spent several weeks as a counselor at a private ESL overnight camp in Mayenne. I supervised the campers (ages 12-17) from morning until evening, during classes, meals, games, and group activities. I saw firsthand that students learn best when they are encouraged to ask questions, engage with the material, and relate what they learn to their own experiences.
I have also worked with toddlers in both Quito and in Paris, teaching them basic English vocabulary during games, outings, and mealtimes.
In addition to my experience tutoring English, I have taught French to high school students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and tutored American students in mathematics, French, reading comprehension, and grammar.
